4 Groups of People Who Shouldn't Get the COVID-19 Vaccine Just Yet 1

People with severe allergies

Individuals who have had severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) to prior vaccines, drugs or foods have also been advised to hold off on getting the vaccine. People in this group have also been excluded from late-stage trials conducted by Pfizer and Moderna.

For this reason, the FDA has not authorized vaccination for those with severe allergic reactions to the ingredients in either vaccine, although the vaccines don’t include any common allergenic ingredients, according to the pharmaceutical companies. It is suspected that, in rare cases, the allergic reaction may come from polyethylene glycol, an ingredient found in the lipid component of both vaccines, but also in foods, cosmetics, and certain medications.

“People with just run of the mill seasonal allergies in general, I don’t expect them to have problems with this,” said Dr. Erin Reigh, staff physician in the Section of Allergy and Clinical Immunology at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.
