Delirium
“Delirium is a state of acute confusion that starts suddenly and can occur during any illness,” as explained by the ZOE Covid Symptom Study conducted by Tim Spector, a professor of genetic epidemiology at King’s College London. It is not clearly known what sets off this disturbance but experts know there is a connection between delirium and low oxygen levels or an underlying illness on the brain such as dementia.
Delirium commonly affects older people and is often overlooked or misdiagnosed. Doctors treating patients hospitalized with COVID-19 reported that a large number experienced delirium, with older adults having more severe episodes. Delirium has become quite common in COVID-19 that some health experts suggested including the condition among the disease’s diagnostic criteria.
