Research conducted at the Northwestern Medicine health system found that up to one-third of hospitalized patients displayed “altered mental function.” One cause might be that COVID-19 prevents the lungs from oxygenating the blood, thus the brain receiving lower levels of oxygen. Another reason would be that the virus causes inflammation in certain areas of the brain, which could lead to hallucinations.
