Why is the risk higher in obese people?
Obesity has been associated with increased inflammation in the body and weaker immune system, which, in turn, has been linked to a higher death rate from other illnesses, such as influenza. More than that, obese individuals are at a higher risk of developing other health conditions related to severe COVID.
According to Dr. Ana Mostaghim, lead author of the PLoS One study, obese COVID-19 patients are more vulnerable and more prone to poor COVID-19 outcomes due to other risk factors such as type-2 diabetes, hypertension and coronary artery disease, which are “inflammatory and immune-mediated”.
