If you don’t have any experience with doctors (and we wish you don’t), at least you heard about misdiagnoses. Unfortunately, they happen all the time, no matter if you suffer from a serious illness or not. Some patients are second-guessing every diagnosis they’d receive, while others absorb them immediately, without question.

As it is only natural, this shouldn’t happen so often, but there are many factors that go into diagnosing a patient. Our first advice is to always look for a second opinion (if you have the possibility). Other than that, we made a list of commonly misdiagnosed diseases, so you can know what to look after.

Misdiagnosed diseases

  1. Cancer – When diagnosing cancer, it’s important to have a complete medical history, enough time to make a proper evaluation of the patient, and all the needed information.
  2. Heart Attack – The most at risk of being misdiagnosed are the elderly and the women because they have different symptoms.
  3. Depression – This illness is easy to misdiagnose because it has some overlapping symptoms with other mental illnesses, like anxiety, PTSD, and bipolar disorder.
  4. Celiac Disease – Because this illness has so many diverse symptoms, it cannot be characterized.
  5. Stroke – Younger people that are suffering from strokes are often misdiagnosed with migraines, vertigo, or being confused because of the alcohol. No matter the age, strokes can appear, so if you experience trouble seeing, being in a confused state, intense headaches, facial paralysis, or difficulty talking, go seek a doctor’s opinion.
  6. Lyme Disease – Lyme Disease appears when humans are bitten by ticks. This example is extremely relevant because you can have Lyme disease and get misdiagnosed if you don’t mention correctly to the doctor the surroundings you live in. To avoid the possibility of getting infected with Lyme disease, try using this.
  7. Fibromyalgia – Fibromyalgia is a chronic disease that exhibits muscular pain, joint pain, exhaustion, nervousness and trouble sleeping.
  8. Thyroid conditions – These conditions are so easy to misdiagnose because their many symptoms are linked to hormone imbalance.
  9. Aortic dissection – Almost 30 percent of cases of aortic dissection are being misdiagnosed because it requires immediate action and can be often undetected.
  10. Pulmonary embolism – Pulmonary embolism can be often confused with other conditions, like a heart attack or pneumonia.
