Hair Loss: Signs, Treatments & Best Prevention Tips from Experts

Hair loss is one of the most common complaints for women and men alike – especially after a certain age. If you’re concerned about the same thing, we’ve got you covered. Let’s find out what are the real causes behind this symptom and when it’s time to seek help.

Hair loss: normal or not?

Before we go any further, know that losing some hair on a daily basis is normal and healthy. The American Academy of Dermatologists say that you can lose between 50-100 strands of hair every day. Seems like a lot?

Well, not really. You have at least 100,000 hair follicles on your scalp, so losing a few dozens daily is barely noticeable.

According to dermatologists, though, losing 200-300 strands of hair daily for 4-6 months is considered pathological and could be a sign of alopecia areata*. This condition happens when the immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles; it happens either suddenly or over several years and can lead to hair loss on any part of the body.

Right now, there’s no cure for alopecia, but there are a few treatments with proven results that help your hair grow back quicker. You can also opt for procedures that cover up the hair loss.

Other causes:

  • Aging
  • Stress (inhibits the normal growth of hair strands)
  • Imbalanced diet (poor in nutrients your hair needs to stay strong)
  • Styling habits (constantly straightening/curling your hair, using low-quality hair care products)
  • Certain medication (including heart and anti-diabetes medication)

ATTENTION! These are just some potential cause for hair loss. If you notice sudden and/or severe hair loss accompanied by symptoms such as fever, irregular heartbeat or pain, contact your doctor as soon as possible.

Preventing hair loss

So what can you do to keep your hair healthy, strong and beautiful over the years? Try one of these products below:

  1. Supplements. Researchers found that vitamins A, B, C, D, along with selenium, zinc and iron are essential for healthy hair growth and retention. If you think your diet isn’t rich in these nutrients, you may consider taking a multivitamin supplement.
  2. Hair care. Washing your hair on a regular basis helps to maintain a healthy scalp that keeps hair roots strong. Try to find a balance in how frequently you wash the hair and use a mild shampoo that matches your hair type.
  3. Coconut oil. Studies performed in 2018 show that the lauric acid found in coconut oil could bind protein in hair, thus preventing breakage. Coconut oil massages keep the scalp hydrated while improving blood flow too.
