12 Beloved Foods you didn’t know are this salty

  • Salad dressing– Some of the sodium that is found in a salad dressing comes from salt, but some brands might add sodium-containing flavor additives. In a review of major brand-name foods in our stores, a salad dressing has on average 304 mg of sodium per 2-tablespoon serving.
  • Pizza– Pizza and other multi-ingredient dishes are responsible for almost half of the sodium Americans consume. There are many ingredients that contain significant amounts of sodium, such as cheese, dough, processed meat, and sauce.
  • Sandwiches– Sandwiches are another example of multi-ingredient food that accounts for almost half of the sodium Americans consume. If you want to cut back on some salty ingredients, you can choose unprocessed sandwich toppings, like chicken breasts and sliced avocado.
  • Broths and stocks– Packaged broths and stocks are used as the base for soups or stews, and they’re famously high in salt. To let the numbers scare you, a 240-mL serving of beef broth has on average 782 mg of sodium, and the chicken and vegetables broths are similarly high in sodium.
  • Boxed potato casseroles– Boxed potato dishes have a lot of salt. Some might also contain sodium from MSG and preservatives. It would be better if you’d swap boxed potatoes for more nutritious choices, such as baked sweet potatoes.
  • Pork rinds– Crunchy pork rinds have been increasingly popular among keto-diet lovers. The thing is, they’re high in sodium. A 28-gram serving of pork rinds has 515 mg of sodium. As an alternative, consider eating unsalted nuts.
