Cherrystones are extremely popular summer fruits. Maybe because they are so delicious and addictive. But do you know what else cherry stones are? Deadly. Similar to other stone fruits like peaches, plums, and apricots, cherry pits include hydrogen cyanide, a type of poison that could kill a 150-pound person.
“Spit out your cherry seeds because they contain the poisonous compound hydrogen cyanide,” warns Dr. Keith Kantor, nutritionist and CEO of the Nutritional Addiction Mitigation Eating and Drinking program. A cherry pit includes around 0.17 grams of cyanide so it would take more than one pit to hurt you but ingesting around 0.1 grams can be fatal.
