Another breakfast staple that might be aging you beyond your years is orange juice. That’s because orange juice, and fruit juice in general, is high in sugar, compared to the actual fruit. An 8-ounce glass of orange juice contains 25.5 grams of carbohydrates, 10 grams more than an orange.
As sweet as it can be, sugar, unfortunately, increases signs of aging, accentuating the wrinkles and fine lines on your face and the sagging skin in the neck and chin area. It also interferes with collagen production, causing a blemished skin and a loss of skin elasticity.
“If you put a banana out on the counter and [peel] it, what happens in 24-48 hours? It gets brown. What’s happening is the sugars in that banana are reacting with proteins, causing cross-linking and the brown color (browning reaction),” explained physician Andre Nish at UnityPoint Health. “The exact same reaction is happening in our bodies. We’re browning from the inside out”.
You might love your morning cup of Joe beyond words, but it might not show you the same TLC. According to New York City dermatologist Deborah Wattenberg, caffeine can make you look much older due to its diuretic-like effect. This means it increases the water excretion from your body, and, without water, your skin will starts looking wrinkly and washed out.
But wait! It gets worse! According to survey data published in the HuffPost, 72 percent of coffee drinkers sweeten their hot drinks with dairy or non-dairy creamer. Most half-and-half or cream products cause inflammation while some non-dairy creamers include skin-damaging trans fats. More than that, 30 percent of surveyed people add high-GI sugar to their coffees, turning it into the ultimate “aging” drink.
