Diet soda might seem like a healthier option, compared to sugar-sweetened beverages but it can still cause havoc to your health when consumed in excess. According to a study published in 2017 in Stroke, drinking diet soda on a daily basis can make you three times more at risk of having a stroke or developing dementia, as opposed to people who don’t drink it at all.
“High amounts of sugars cause neurological damage” because they cause inflammation, warns Wesley Delbridge, RDN and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
