7 Expert-Recommended Aids to Cure Your Insomnia (All Natural!)

Valerian Root

The first people to discover the valuable health benefits of valerian were our ancestors. Today, the root of this herb is known as a great sleep aid. Whether you take it as a supplement or as a tea, this plant interacts with GABA in a positive way.

GABA, or gamma-aminobutyric acid, is a neurotransmitter that encourages you to fall asleep and stay asleep through the night. When it works properly, it can do wonders for your sleep quality.

Gravity weighted blanket

When I was little, my parents wrapped me up in a heavy blanket during cold winter nights. Honestly, that was the best sleep I’ve had in my life!

Today, scientists developed gravity weighted blankets work through deep pressure stimulation. This therapeutic technique can relieve pain, relax your brain and even lower anxiety levels.

This study published in Occupational Therapy in Mental Health asked 32 participants to use a weighted blanked. At the end of the study, 33% of the participants reported considerably decreased anxiety levels.

Eye pillow

Dr. W. Chris Winter, MD, owner of Charlottesville Neurology and Sleep Medicine, insists on the importance of keeping your room dark during sleep hours. And by ‘dark’ I mean no light sources at all.

Previous research proved that even a 5 lux of light (the intensity of a regular candlelight) can affect the quality of your sleep. Unless you have blackout curtains, wearing a sleep mask can help you make sure that no light affects your resting hours.

Chamomile tea

According to Dr. Ruiz, creating a set of relaxing habits before bed can make a real difference for your sleep quality. Taking a warm shower, asking your spouse for massage or reading a bit can all put you in the right mood for a good night’s rest.

One of the best options? A cup of tea!

Chamomile tea, for example, contains an antioxidant called apigenin which is known for reducing anxiety. Furthermore, this plant offers mild tranquilizing effects that help you wind down after a long day.
