Number one on our list of smelly foods: onions. There are only a few things more damaging to your social life than the smell of onions coming from your mouth. Onions, especially when consumed raw, release a methyl-allyl sulfide which can linger on a person’s breath for hours.
Part of the same family as onion, garlic is just as powerful when it comes to unpleasant whiffs. The garlic scent can stay on your breath and even in the sweat for more than 20 hours and even overnight, no matter how much you brush your teeth.
It’s not solely the garlic that’s causing the foul smell, it’s the chemistry taking place in your body. When eaten, a compound in the garlic called allicin is broken down into allyl methyl and released into the bloodstream. This sulfur compound is then expelled through the lungs, throat and out the mouth, turning you into a walking stank house.
