Initially, this substance was patented by chemical companies as a flame retardant. Nowadays, you’re probably drinking BVO because it’s used as an emulsifier in citrus-flavored sodas and sports drinks.
While it might not be the worst substance on our list, BVO is still dangerous since it gradually accumulates in human tissue. In some cases, it can cause toxicity which translates into skin rashes, heart problems, organ damage and even birth defects.
BVO is banned in Japan and other countries, but American manufacturers have been using it since 1977 when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration first approved it.
