Your risk of lung cancer decreases

Smoking is by far the leading cause of lung cancer. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, more than 80% of lung cancer deaths are caused by cigarette smoking. Apart from the nicotine, cigarettes include over 70 harmful chemicals known to cause, initiate or aggravate cancer.

By quitting smoking, you stop ingesting all those cancer-causing chemicals and decrease your risk of lung cancer. It does not disappear completely or return to that of a non-smoker, but it gets considerably lower.
