The FDA has already authorized booster shots for those who are immunocompromised. This has been followed by a CDC recommendation to give the third dose to those who are most at risk. But the agencies haven’t proceeded on recommending third doses for everybody, although the White House is reviewing this possibility.
These decisions are preventive and are trying to avoid the concerns that the efficacy of the vaccines might lower over time. After all, there is evidence to prove that the vaccine’s protection does fade. Giving all this, a booster shot appears to be the answer to all questions so far.
