Nothing lasts forever, especially not fruits, vegetables, meat, and dairy products. When it comes to pantry staples, most of us assume these can last for ages at room temperature but, in reality, these can spoil too. Much sooner than you think.
In most cases, it’s the oils and fats in the mix that go rancid. This is the case with flour, nut butters or rice. Storage location plays a big part in how long these foods can last.
Captain’s tip: Keep flour and nuts in the freezer, in sealed containers, to prevent oxidation. Dry yeast should be stored in the freezer as well, if you’re not using it every day. Many condiments can be kept in the refrigerator for 6 to 12 months.
