12 Food Safety Mistakes You’re Definitely Making In The Kitchen

Not understanding labels

Most people think “best by” dates warn against consuming a product after those dates. In reality, best by refers to a product’s quality, not its safe consumption. If you’ve eaten something past its best by date, you won’t get sick, but you’ll probably not enjoy the product as much.

Captain’s tip: What you should really pay attention to and know what it means is the “used by” date. It indicates that a food is safe to eat by a certain date and consumption past that date might result in food poisoning or other health problems.

“Let your nose and eyes be the judge. If it’s just past the ‘best by’ date, and still smells okay and looks okay, then it’s probably okay. But if you have any doubt, throw it out. It’s not worth getting sick!” McManus says.
