According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the optimum refrigerator temperature is below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. As for the freezer, its temperature should not be set higher than 32 degrees Fahrenheit, explains Lisa McManus, executive tasting and testing editor at America’s Test Kitchen in Boston, Massachusetts.
Captain’s tip: To make sure you’re not setting the refrigerator temperature too high and risk spoiling all the food inside, buy a fridge and freezer thermometer. It will let you know if these appliances are at the correct temperature and working properly to keep food is kept in proper storage conditions and safe to eat.
