“Just because you have acid reflux, or heartburn, does not always mean you have high stomach acid”, says Karen Brennan, MSW, CNC, board-certified in holistic nutrition and owner of TruFoods Nutrition Services, LLC.
Many people confuse high stomach acid with low stomach acid, as both can have similar symptoms such as heartburn, bloating, belching, wind after meals. Antiacids might alleviate these symptoms for a while but they do not solve the real problem. Not to mention they can come with their own fair share of side effects such as reducing the absorption of vitamins and minerals and increasing the risk of heart attack, chronic kidney disease or infections.
