Mental illness meaning

Mental health problems are not the result of personal weakness, lack of character or lack of education. Mental illness affects young and old, men and women, and does not take into account nationality or ethnic roots, level of education or financial status.

Each of us can feel worried or anxious –  “I’m on the ground”, as we call ourselves, from time to time. However, relatively few people develop a mental illness. What’s the difference? A mental illness is a condition that gets in the way of thinking, relating to others and carrying out daily activities.

Dozens of mental illnesses have been identified and defined to date. These include depression, anxiety disorders (generalized anxiety disorder, panic attack, OCD, PTSD), eating disorders (eg anorexia, bulimia), mood disorders (bipolar, major depression), schizophrenia, dependence on certain substances and many others.

The good news is that most of the time mental illness can be treated. The signs and symptoms of mental illness depend in part on the disease itself. Symptoms can affect your emotions, thoughts or behavior.
