Various kinds of sprouts, such as broccoli, alfalfa, or bean seeds, are usually part of the healthy foods category. They are consumed by people worldwide for their nutritional value, vitamins and minerals they provide.
However, when it comes to the elderly population’s diet, sprouts are best to be avoided. The main reason is that sprouts are usually grown in a warm, humid environment, the same environment that illness-causing bacteria thrive in. Harmful bacteria like salmonella and E-coli are usually found in the seeds, so, seniors should avoid ingesting the contaminated seeds, to avoid becoming sick and be at an increased risk of developing secondary conditions like pneumonia.
