Wellness Captain Signs That You Are Lactose Intolerant

What can you do about it?

Let’s say you think you may be dealing with a lactose intolerance. What’s next?

Specialists recommend that you should start keeping a food diary. Write down everything you eat and any symptoms that may show up. If you’re lactose intolerant, chances are you’ll get digestive discomfort every time after you eat foods which contain lactose.

The diagnosis is usually made by a gastroenterologist; depending on the severity and frequency of your symptoms, a specialist may also perform an endoscopy. This procedure involves introducing a tiny camera down your throat to examine the gastrointestinal tract (I know how it sounds, but rest assured that doctors only request this step if it’s absolutely necessary).

On the bright side, lactose intolerance can be very easily managed.

Rabia de Latour, MD, gastroenterologist and assistant professor of medicine at NYU Langone Health, says that this diagnosis is inconvenient at most; that’s because the most important way of reducing the symptoms is to reduce or eliminate any foods that contain lactose.
