Not washing your hands thoroughly

To prevent the spread of harmful germs onto other surfaces, washing your hands early on and thoroughly is essential. It’s very easy for bacteria to reach from people’s hands to food, surfaces and kitchen equipment.

“People don’t wash their hands long enough. Washing your hands is one of the best ways to stop the spread of foodborne pathogens,” McManus says.

Captain’s tip: The FDA suggests scrubbing the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails for at least 20 seconds, rinsing and drying with a clean towel, preferably a disposable one. If it helps, you can try singing ‘Happy Birthday’.
