Moles: Causes, Warning Signs and Prevention

What are moles?

Moles are small, colored spots caused by collections of pigment cells, known as melanocytes. Most of them develop in childhood and teenage years but they can also appear during adulthood, in relation to sun exposure and melanin production.

Most adults, especially those with fair skin, have between 10 and 40 moles, many of them developing by age 40. They usually change very slowly, over years and even fade away. Most of them are harmless but if you notice and sudden changes in color or size, you should see your health care professional.
