Peeling

This can be caused by external trauma to the nail itself. Some examples would be if you used your nails as a tool, pressed into the nail too firmly, or removed acrylic nail polish.

If you notice that your toenails are also peeling, it might be due to an iron deficiency. To avoid this from happening, try looking for products that are called “hypoallergenic”, as they contain milder or even natural chemical agents.

As a last resort, you should rule out a fungal infection. Nail dystrophy can be caused by onychomycosis, which is a fungal infection of the nail. If you think you might have a fungal infection, the best thing to do is to consult your dermatologist.

Has this ever happened to you?
