8 Most Common Diseases You Can Get from Your Pet 1

Cat scratch fever

Cat scratch fever, also called bartonellosis in medical terms, is a bacterial disease that can affect humans and comes from cats infected with Bartonella henselae bacteria. It usually results from a lick, bite or scratch from a cat and manifests itself a few days after contact with the feline.

If you’ve been infected with the bacteria, you might develop fever, headaches, tiredness, swollen lymph nodes and lack of appetite. More severe cases can compromise one’s immunity. As a cat owner myself, I am definitely relieved that the disease can easily be treated with antibiotics!

Parrot fever

Don’t think cats are the only ones giving you the chills! Birds such as parrots, parakeets, and cockatiels can also make you sick by infecting you with Chlamydia psittaci, a type of bacteria present in dry bird droppings. Your parrot may not have any symptoms, but you could experience fever and chills, headache, muscle aches, dry and even bloody cough.
