  • Carb-dense food – Some people hear ”carbs” and immediately run in the other direction. While this reaction is somehow justified, in reality, not ALL carbs are bad! In fact, complex carbs like sweet potatoes, squash, and even brown rice are extremely good in keeping belly fat down, as long as they’re not eaten in excess. According to Dr. Aviva Romm, an integrative women’s health specialist, the real problem comes when you eat simple carbs, such as processed flour products like white bread or white rice. Dr. Romm explained that complex carbs make good use of energy and blood sugar levels, while simple carbs cause sugar and insulin spikes.
  • Unhealthy fats – There are three types of dietary fats that are linked to inflammation and contribute to excess belly fat: trans fats, saturated fats, and omega-6 fats. Trans fats are still around, which is a HUGE issue, not only when it comes to our belly. Trans fats, which are found in baked goods and fried foods, increase the risk of heart disease. So instead of that, you can try eating good quality fats, like olive oil and avocado.
  • Processed meat – Processed meat is tasty, but it is also very high in kilojoules and saturated fats. It’s not only bad for your stomach but it can also be followed by heart disease and stroke. According to dietitian Julie Rothenberg, processed meats are extremely difficult for lots of people to digest. They might sit longer than needed in the intestines, which makes them bad for digestion.
  • Fried foods – Fried foods overwhelm the stomach, which results in acid reflux and heartburn. Rothenberg explained that fried foods might sit in your stomach just as much as processed foods. Your body needs a longer time to digest fried foods because they’re rich in high-fat content.
