The alkaline diet is not only about losing weight but also about maintaining the ideal pH balance. Adepts of this diet claim that by eliminating acidic foods such as meat, sugar and processed foods and replacing them with alkaline foods such as vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds, you lose weight, maintain a healthy pH balance and as a bonus, lower the risk of arthritis and cancer.

While it’s true that toxins are filtered out of your body by the kidneys, “studies have not conclusively proven that any one food can affect your body’s pH level,” says registered dietitian at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, Brittany Linn. The weight loss effects, if any, are mainly due to the exclusive consumption of plant-based foods. However, if you’re not ready to go vegetarian for the long haul, this diet is definitely not for you.
