Experts Finally Bust These 6 Myths About Fitness After 50
Myth #2: ‘I’ve never exercised so why start now’
In this life, it’s never too late for anything – and that includes physical activity.
Your body is naturally designed to stay active; although it may seem difficult at first, creating a habit out of performing sports can bring a huge positive impact regardless of your age.
As Alice Bell, PT, Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in Geriatric Physical Therapy, likes to say, your body has no expiration date in terms of fitness abilities. Whether you’re planning to run, ride a bike, start hiking or just take a daily walk, your body is definitely ready for it.
If you’re suffering from any illnesses or you think you’re not in such great shape, it’s always a good idea to get a checkup with your doctor first.
Myth #3: ‘I’m inflexible and I lack balance’
Genetics play an important role in determining how flexible your body can be. However, there’s no such thing as being too inflexible for physical activity even if you feel that way!
Before you begin any type of physical activity, do at least 5 minutes of stretching. Your joints, muscles and bones need to ‘wake up’ a little before being put in motion; after a certain age, it’s equally important that your heart rate increases gradually to avoid any shock or high blood pressure.
As for balance, Dr. McCan explains that it’s just like any other physical skill: the more you work on it, the better it will get. Whether we talk about riding the bike, practicing yoga or attending a pilates class, practice really does make perfect.
