However, with a little bit of help from you, like wearing warm clothes, your body is quite capable of taking care of itself even when it’s as cold as an air conditioner running in Antarctica. As the famous Scottish comedian, Billy Connolly once said ‘There’s no such thing as bad weather – only the wrong clothes!’

It could be anemia.

Anemia is a blood disorder that occurs when your system doesn’t produce enough red cells to ensure the transport of oxygen through your body, as explained by the American Society of Hematology (ASH). This causes irregular blood flow to your limbs, causing your hands and feet, in particular, to feel colder, according to Neha Vyas, M.D., a family physician at the Cleveland Clinic.

Anemia is most commonly associated with iron deficiency, but it can also be caused by your body being unable to absorb enough B12 or folic acid. Other symptoms of anemia include:

  • Fatigue
  • Paleness
  • Irregular heartbeats
