8 Natural Remedies to Treat Your Swollen Feet 1

  1. Magnesium supplements

If you think you may be suffering from a magnesium deficiency, know that it could also cause swollen feet by promoting water retention.

As long as your doctor approves it, you can try taking 200-400 mg of magnesium supplementation daily to test whether your feet condition improves or not. Usually, though, such supplements are not recommended for people suffering from a kidney or heart condition.

Additionally, you can also include more foods rich in magnesium to your diet, such as:

  • Dark leafy greens such as spinach
  • Nuts of all kinds
  • Dark chocolate

  1. Massage

Opting for a massage therapy may seem a bit risky since we’re still in the middle of a pandemic. While you can also learn some basic techniques right at home, many massage therapists are also available for home sessions which is considerably safer.

A good foot massage can relax tense muscles and improve blood circulation. How does it work? When your therapist applies pressure in certain areas of the feet with different intensities, your body activates the lymphatic system which can move excess fluid out of your feet.

If you’d still prefer to do a massage yourself, here’s a simple technique: stroke each foot toward your heart at least two times a day. Make sure to use firm pressure, but not so much that it hurts. Be gentle at first until you get the right intensity that’s both comfortable and effective.

  1. Limit your salt intake

Salt can be a major decisive factor for increasing your fluid retention. Even though you may not add it to the foods you cook, don’t be fooled – plenty of store-bought products are extremely rich in salt.

Some of the most common products include pretzels, fast foods, chips and canned produce. In this case, your doctor can perform a simple blood test to let you know how much salt you can safely consume daily.

General recommendations from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada say that you shouldn’t get more than 2,300 mg of sodium every day.
