Strong Emotions? 11 Ways To Outsmart Them
How to become the boss of your emotions:Â
- Understand the impact of your emotions –Â Intense emotions are important to be felt. And from time to time, it’s normal to feel emotionally overwhelmed, whether something good or bad happens.
- Aim for regulation, not repression –Â While you can’t control your emotions with a dial, imagine you could at least manage them. Suppressing or repressing emotions can prevent you from experiencing and expressing feelings. What is important to remember is to know how to make the difference between exercising control over your emotions and sweeping them under the rug.
- Identify exactly what you’re feeling –Â When something upsets you badly, you might have the tendency to knock over your wastebasket, kick your desk, and stubbing your toe. In those moments, it’s best if you interrupt and ask yourself: What am I feeling right now?
- Accept all your emotions –Â If you want to get better at managing your emotions, you have to accept them as well. Increasing your comfort around intense emotions will allow you to feel them, without reacting extremely.
- Keep a mood journal –Â Writing down or typing your feelings and responses they trigger can help you. Sometimes, all you have to do is to trace with your memory the emotions back through your thoughts. Putting down on paper what you once felt can allow you to reflect on them more deeply.
- Take a deep breath –Â We are sometimes completely unaware of the power of the breath, either we’re extremely happy or so angry we can’t speak. Although slowly breathing won’t make those intense feelings magically disappear, deep breathing exercises can help us ground ourselves.
