Why are people more scared of COVID-19 than the flu?

Data suggests that one person infected with seasonal influenza (aka the flu) might infect about 1.3 other people. Meanwhile, research so far showed that SARS-CoV-2 (the virus responsible for coronavirus) could infect two to four people. The easier a virus is transmitted, the more people get sick and need medical help simultaneously, thus overwhelming the health system.

Why should I stay home if I’m likely to get COVID-19 anyway?

Considering how difficult it is to trace the new coronavirus, it’s likely that a large majority of the world will get the disease sooner or later (see below). Many people are then asking why should they take such drastic protection measures?

I’ll keep this short and simple: there are so many people who need more help than you do. Even if you get a mild form of the disease, you will still require medical assistance and resources like medication, tests and doctors’ precious time. All these things can be used to (quite literally) save a life.

Clearly, we can’t eliminate the virus. What we can do instead is try to minimize its spread so the healthcare system stays balanced enough to handle infected patients.

How many of us will be infected? Are things that overwhelming?

I’d like to have a different answer, but health experts worldwide agree that things aren’t looking that good.

Judging by current data, the U.S. will likely have between 66-231 million citizens infected leading to 1.2-4.6 million deaths. As Dave Troy explains, these numbers might as well be ‘an overestimate’ because we don’t have enough knowledge on how SARS-CoV-2 is spreading.

Truth be told, we don’t know the mortality rate either (though the WHO estimates it’s around 3.4%). The reason why this pandemic is such a big deal is because healthcare systems may be overwhelmed – aside from the fact that every other aspect of our lives is upside down.
