This study conducted in South Africa analyzed 2,000 young adults who have recently been vaccinated using the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine. According to the results, the vaccine only offers ‘limited protection’ against mild and moderate COVID-19 cases caused by the new South African variant.
However, specialists can still confirm that the new vaccine can prevent complications and reduce the severity of the symptoms.
The first cases of the new South African variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus outside of Africa have been reported in the UK. However, it’s unlikely that this new variant will become dominant around the globe and the AstraZeneca vaccine is effective against other known variants.
