Top 10 Mosquito-Infested Cities in the U.S. (Are You in One of Them?)
Miami, Florida
Unfortunately, the mosquito population in South Florida is quite dynamic. But what’s interesting in this particular situation, is that this summer, a biotechnology firm called Oxitec delivered eggs of genetically modified mosquitos.
The operation wants to use genetic engineering, rather than insecticides, to control the mosquito population, especially the ones that are carrying diseases. The move targets an invasive species called “Aedes aegypti”, which carries Zika, dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever and other potentially deadly diseases. The experiment is based on a genetic alteration that will be lethal to a large number of future offspring. The results are yet to be shown.
