4. Who will get the first doses?
Data from NPR suggests that the first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer will be distributed to every state according to its population. Then, it’s up to each state to prioritize vaccine receivers based on their own judgment.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are plenty of people who desperately need vaccination:
- 21 million healthcare workers
- 87 million essential workers
- 100 million high-risk adults with underlying medical conditions
- 53 million adults who are +65
CDC officials recommend states to offer the first vaccine doses to healthcare workers along with long-term care residents.
However, many states are likely to plan different strategies based on their current situation (health-wise).
