Forcing yourself to sit up straight

I remember my mom telling me that hunching is not lady-like, looks bad and is bad for my back. She was right, by the way.

But forcing yourself to sit back straight is not good either, explains Neel Anand, MD, clinical professor of surgery and director of spine trauma at Cedars-Sinai Spine Center in Los Angeles. Keeping a straight position of your back for too long can also put pressure on your back and cause muscle tension, discomfort, and fatigue.

To prevent that from happening but also keep a healthy posture, adjust your chair so that you can keep your knees are at a 90-degree angle, your feet can rest flat on the floor, and your lower back is properly supported. Also, don’t forget to “stand up, stretch, and take a quick walk several times a day to keep from getting stiff or causing injury,” Anand suggests.
